Challenge: In 2008, The First Quality Group of diversified companies decided to add another sister company to manufacture premium quality diapers for babies and toddler that were to be made in the USA. A massive one million square-foot manufacturing facility was to be built in Mifflin County and the vast amount of the work needed to be completed within a four month period.
Solution: George J. Hayden, Inc. provided a design/build, 15KV power distribution system for a one million plus square foot, state-of-the art production facility. The plant was going to be utilizing leading edge technology so primary power was of the utmost importance at this new 300 acre site. Compounding a compressed schedule and adverse weather conditions was the utility company’s failure to provide 46KV power within the requested time frame, which resulted in adding a temporary 15KV line-up and a unit-substation to the overall scope. The Hayden team had to customize four, 13-ton pre-cast PMH foundations and thirteen unique leveling structures had to be fabricated for the switchboard and switchgear housekeeping pads. The vast majority of work needed to be completed within a four month period. About fifty tons of copper wire was ultimately energized and placed into service. Hayden Electric’s technician’s made up nearly one hundred high voltage terminations and assured that quality control was maintained throughout extensive testing.
Results:
- The Hayden team completed the project within budget and on time allowing the owners to fulfill their sales commitment with a large, nation-wide retailer.
- The facility would bring hundreds of jobs to the Lewistown, Pennsylvania area.
- Hayden Electric also designed an emergency trip system for the main electrical rooms and a fiber-optic power monitoring system to help this client GO GREEN.
