Graham Packaging / Pepsico 69KV Substation

Challenge: George J. Hayden Inc. was selected to represent Graham Packaging, Pepsico and Salt River Project Utility Company in the installation of the first ever joint substation in the state of Arizona-never before had two separate companies and the utility company joined forces to install a 69 KV substation. Substations are not new to Hayden Electric, however, coordination this project was particularly unique as it involved two separate companies coming together to share a substation. Coordination between both companies and Salt River Project utility Company required patience, attention to each entity's individual needs and an extensive degree of high voltage knowledge and experience.

Solution: The Hayden team provided a turnkey operation to the owners by providing all design, engineering, consultation and drawings, including architectural, building, civil and electrical. Along with the extensive nature of the turnkey operation, Hayden was required to provide design of the block building; masonry and metal fencing; gates; heating ventilation and air conditioning; fire alarm system; an extensive fiber and data backbone; and all electrical. Project began on site in January 2007 where Hayden secured strong subcontractors to assist with the tasks outside the firm’s area of expertise and focused its energies on managing the project, coordination efforts between owners and tackling hands-on electrical tasks.

The electrical scope of work was extremely difficult in that Hayden Electrical had to minimize the number and duration of shutdowns necessary in preparing the substation, replacing and re-feeding existing services and installing miles of new duct banks all within the deadline of four months. In true Hayden fashion, all coordination and expertise paid off. The transfer was done smoothly with no problems, safety issues or loss of power.

Results:

  • George J. Hayden, Inc. tackled yet another challenging project which proved to be the first of its kind for the firm, as well as for the state of Arizona.

  • In true Hayden fashion, all coordination and expertise paid off. The transfer was done smoothly with no problems, safety issues or loss of power.
  • From utilizing Arizona’s largest crane at 550 ton to coordination efforts from Hazleton, Pennsylvania to the south wet, all aspects of the project were flawlessly executed

  • As a result of Hayden’s installation of this 69 KV substation, both companies have realized substantial decreases in monthly electrical costs; and whining four years the cost of the project will be fully recovered.
  • Recipient of 2007 Associated Builders & Contractors, Inc., Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter, Merit Shop Award of Excellence in Construction – Electrical Industrial
